Sharpening Hand Tools

Many woodworkers are intimidated by the idea of sharpening their hand tools. This task really isn't as difficult as it might seem. Approached with some patience, and armed with some basic information, it's really a matter of practicing. Knowing doing irreversible harm isn't likely, makes it somewhat less intimidating.

With so many options available, it becomes somewhat overwhelming trying to decide which sharpening device, or method will provide the best results, most easily. Since there are many different tools requiring a very sharp edge for wood workers, the method chosen will need to be adaptable, or at least have accessories to provide versatility.

New Block Plane Showing Rough Sole

Tuning a block plane is often an overlooked practice. By this I mean many woodworkers, myself included at one time, will buy a block plane, take it home and start using it right from the box. While some brands have come a long way towards selling a product that is actually ready for use, there is still the potential to gain much more from it.
