17 Foot Dining Room Table part 6

Looking at the bases with the applied moldings on them, I decided it would look better if the were elevated a little. So I decided to make a piece to sit on the tops of the pedestals. Just to make the moldings stand out a little more.

The bottoms of the plywood bases left raw plys exposed after cutting the curves on the bottom surfaces. Once again, Bondo to the rescue. By coating the plys with Bondo, it is quite easy to smooth and prepare for a finish.

In this case, the finish is a water based stain from General Finished, availabe from Woodcraft. The more I use this brand of finishes, the more I like them. The base will be stained with black, and it colored the Bondo very well.

Once they were glued and screwed on, a Japanese chisel was use to shape them, along with help from chisel hammer. Then they were cleaned up with a paring chisel, and finished using sand paper. Bondo was also used to fill the seams and screw holes on them.

The pedestals have a hollow center section, which has a plywood column. This column is the structural support for the table. The carved Mahogany parts are not part of the tables support system. There will be a piece of all thread running through the tables' sub frame, through the column and the sub base. With lock washers and nuts on both the top and bottom, the table will be quite solidly attached to it's base, while not applying any stress to the carved parts.
