17 Foot Dining Room Table - part 1

A current commission. Building a dining room table, with three carved pedestal bases, and a bookmatched veneer top.

Below is a picture provided by the designer. It shows a Two Pedestal Italian made table, which is 9' long. The purpose of the photo was to show the style desired by the client.

Building a 17' dining room table brings with it some special challenges. The sheer size of it in a small shop will make for some interesting situations. Working alone on this certainly won't make it easier.

Methods of Cutting Plywood

There are any number of ways to get a 4' by 8' sheets cut into smaller pieces. Some methods are easier than others, but may not meet the standards of accuracy required.

Probably the simplest way to cut sheet goods, whether it be plywood, Melamine, Particle Board, or M.D.F., is to have it cut at the point of purchase. If you're buying your materials at a big box store, they will cut it for you. Generally, the first cut is free, and additional cuts are one dollar. While that's very convenient, there is a down side to this.

The Basement Wood Shop

It is likely that most woodworkers started out working in their basements. That is probably the most common location for a home wood shop.

While it is a great place to work, it does have special considerations, if you have any desire to keep peace in the house. Unless your significant other shares your passion, they aren't likely to overlook some of the little inconveniences, caused by using the space for woodworking.

Buying Tools

While it is generally believed that a small fortune must be invested in woodworking tools and equipment to obtain great results, this is not always the case. It is better to buy one quality tool, than several cheap tools. A high quality tool will work with you, while a cheap tool will work against you.
